Meet Melissa Perkins Armstrong: A Heart for Community: Championing Inclusion, Service, and Special Needs Advocacy

Few people embody the spirit of community service and compassion as profoundly as Melissa Perkins Armstrong, a dedicated advocate, educator, and mother whose passion for giving back shines through every aspect of her life. With a deep commitment to community enrichment, she has spent years serving diverse causes and uplifting individuals from all walks of life.

From volunteering at faith-based and cultural events to supporting charitable causes across Kentucky, her mission is simple yet powerful: to foster inclusion, spread kindness, and amplify the voices of those who deserve to be heard.

Her involvement spans a broad range of initiatives, including efforts supporting the Special Needs community, Kosair for Kids, foster care youth, the WHAS Crusade for Children, Veterans and Military families, Toys for Tots, cancer and neurological disease awareness, equine-assisted programs, homelessness outreach, and many more. Whether partnering with organizations like Model Icon Fashion Productions, Miss Royalty International Pageants, EthanAlmighty Blessings Inc., local humane societies, or community healthcare and senior services, she leads with purpose and heart.

These efforts are not simply volunteer moments—they are a way of life.

Founding Bluegrass Therapy and Equine Center

Driven by a passion for accessible therapeutic services, she founded Bluegrass Therapy and Equine Center, a nonprofit dedicated to serving individuals with special needs through therapeutic and educational activities. The center’s vision is rooted in empowerment, joy, and the belief that every individual deserves opportunities to grow, participate, and shine.

A Mother’s Love and a Mission for Inclusion

As a Special Needs Educator and the proud parent of a remarkable son with special needs, her dedication to advocacy is deeply personal.

“Inclusion isn’t just a concept—it’s a lifeline to empowerment,” she shares. “Our Special Needs Angels deserve to be seen, heard, celebrated, and embraced. This is their community just as much as it is ours.”

Her son, Alex, is more than a source of inspiration—he is a partner in service. Whether attending fundraising events, delivering essential care packages, donating toys, or joining races from his wheelchair, Alex lights up each event with his warm spirit and determination. His presence is a reminder that true acceptance comes not from tolerance, but from genuine love and celebration.

Through constant community involvement, Alex has become widely recognized and welcomed with open arms—a testament to growing awareness, acceptance, and inclusion throughout the region.

A Legacy of Service and Hope

From equine therapy arenas to city parks, charity galas to church halls, her mission stays unwavering: to build a world where love, dignity, and opportunity belong to everyone.

Her message to the world is simple, yet profound:

“God bless the acceptance of our Special Needs Angels. They shine because they are given room to shine.”

With every smile shared, every event supported, and every barrier broken, she and her son continue inspiring others to join in making our communities truly inclusive—one act of kindness at a time.
