Legacy of Love: How Thelma’s Dream Is Transforming Lives One Community at a Time!

By: SitiGirl Magazine Denver, CO

From the pulpit of a small Baptist church to the heart of a thriving community movement, Thelma’s Dream was born out of legacy, love, and lived experience. Founded by Doretta Tootle in honor of her mother, Rev. Thelma, the first African American female Baptist pastor in Denver, this nonprofit organization is on a mission to uplift underserved communities and rewrite their future. “I started Thelma’s Dream to honor the incredible work my mother did throughout her life,” said Tootle. “She was a trailblazer, and she poured her heart into helping others. I knew I had to continue that work—our shared vision—to build something that would live on long after both of us.”

A Vision Rooted in Empowerment

The mission of Thelma’s Dream is clear: to empower at-risk communities to rise above the cycles of poverty, crime, ignorance, and gang violence. The organization focuses on providing healing, inspiration, leadership, and tangible resources that enable individuals to create positive, lasting change in their lives. “Our vision isn’t just about offering aid—it’s about fostering self-sufficiency and creating environmentally and economically sustainable lifestyles,” Tootle explained. “Every day, our work is driven by a desire to ignite leadership and education in those who have been left behind. “This deep commitment to empowerment stems not only from Tootle’s admiration for her mother’s work but from her own experience with hardship. At one point, Tootle and her three sons found themselves homeless, struggling to find even the most basic resources. “There were days when we were turned away from places that promised help,” she said. “It was heartbreaking. But it taught me firsthand how broken the system is for people in need. I knew we needed an organization that not only provided resources but did so with compassion and dignity.”

Staying Grounded in Purpose

Despite the challenges that come with leading a nonprofit, Tootle remains unwavering in

her dedication. She credits her ability to stay focused and true to her mission by

continually returning to her goal.

“I reflect often on why we started this journey and the people we’ve helped,” she shared.

“It’s not just about a single issue—it’s about long-term, sustainable solutions. That

keeps me grounded, even when the demands feel overwhelming.”

Conflict, too, is something Tootle approaches with transparency and empathy. Whether

managing disagreements within the organization or navigating competing priorities, she

emphasizes the importance of communication and a shared commitment to the cause.

Building Bridges for a Better Tomorrow

One of the pillars of Thelma’s Dream’s growth has been its strong, strategic

partnerships. Tootle actively seeks out organizations, donors, and stakeholders who

align with her values and goals.

“I look for partners who see the big picture—who want to make a meaningful

difference,” she said. “We build relationships based on shared purpose, mutual respect,

and a clear understanding of how we can support each other’s work.”

Her method is both thoughtful and targeted, combining value-driven messaging with

research to find collaborators who are invested in long-term impact.

A Legacy in Motion

Now 93 years old, Rev. Thelma’s legacy lives not just in memory, but in every life

touched by the organization that bears her name. Through Doretta Tootle’s unwavering

efforts, Thelma’s Dream is more than a nonprofit—it is a movement for healing, hope,

and transformation.

“My vision for the future is simple,” said Tootle. “A world where people love and accept

one another for who they are, where everyone has access to valid, meaningful

resources. It’s not just about solving problems—it’s about giving people what they need

to build the life they deserve.”

As Thelma’s Dream continues to grow, its message remains the same: with

compassion, collaboration, and commitment, even the darkest circumstances can give

rise to a brighter, stronger tomorrow.
