Vanessa Reasoner’s leadership journey began with a simple favor—face painting at a preschool carnival. From that day, requests from parents poured in, and what started as a side hustle quickly blossomed. Realizing she could not do it alone, Vanessa brought in her best friend, and together they ran a small operation for over a year. When she later relocated to Kentucky, she founded Dynamic Face Paint and Design, growing her dream into a thriving business by recruiting anyone willing to learn. Her driving passion has always provided affordable, joyful entertainment and has been the reason behind a child’s smile.
Of course, leadership has not come without challenges. Seasonal slumps and rising competition often bring moments of doubt, but Vanessa reminds herself not to compare her journey to others. “You should only compare yourself to who you were yesterday,” she says. It is her supportive team and resilience that help her push through, especially during slower months.
Vanessa credits part of her success with advice she received early on: Do not listen to negative people, and if someone cannot afford your services, they are not your target market. Her upbringing in her father’s auto shop also shaped her fearless mindset; working as the only girl among a staff of men taught her to see everyone as equals.
One of her toughest lessons was financial, learning to properly save for taxes after an unexpected hit. She also emphasizes honesty and directness when managing tough conversations, believing straightforward communication builds stronger relationships.
Among her biggest influences is Megan Ivey, a professional clown who showed Vanessa that entertainment could be a real career. Though their paths have not crossed in years, Megan’s mentorship had a lasting impact.
Balancing personal life with a growing business is still a work in progress for Vanessa. Long hours are the norm, but scheduled breaks and a supportive partner help her find moments of rest. Daily, she focuses on skill-building and shares new knowledge with her team, fostering continual growth.
If Vanessa could give her younger self advice, it would be to set boundaries without fear and learn to say no. Though she once struggled with impostor syndrome, especially early on, her father’s advice to “fake it till you make it” helped her persevere. Now, with 20 years in the business, she carries her experience proudly.
One of her proudest moments came during the first Dynamic Face Paint and Design Christmas party, looking around a room filled with her growing team reminded her just how far she had come.
Breaking stereotypes has been another challenge. Despite face painting being a woman-dominated industry, many still view it as a hobby rather than a serious profession. Vanessa works to educate her clients on the training, licensing, and professional standards that define her craft.
Vanessa believes women naturally excel as leaders. With strengths in patience, problem-solving, and multitasking, women bring an invaluable edge to leadership roles—a reality she proudly embodies through her journey and success.
