Caitlyn’s journey into leadership is rooted in her unwavering dedication to advocating for those who are often marginalized and misunderstood. From a young age, Caitlyn observed the mistreatment of disabled individuals in her community. Witnessing people being disregarded, misrepresented, or even made fun of sparked a fire within her. Realizing that equality was far from achieved, Caitlyn felt compelled to push for change. As she puts it, “The disabled deserve the same quality of life as the able-bodied; we deserve a livable wage, safe homes, and much more. The push to help my community is really what keeps me going. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am.”
She acknowledges that doubt is part of the human experience, especially when pursuing something bigger than oneself. She recalls times when others have dismissed her work, claiming it would “not make a difference.” Instead of giving in to these negative remarks, Caitlyn chooses to educate and inform. “I aim to have a conversation,” she says. “I encourage them to look deep into themselves and ask what they would do in my position.” It is during these challenging moments that Caitlyn remembers the messages of encouragement she has received over the years. Knowing that she has inspired others to embrace their disabilities and feel comfortable with their mobility aids gives her the courage to keep moving forward.
Some of the most impactful advice Caitlyn has received came from other women in leadership. The words “If it doesn’t feel right or it doesn’t align with your ethics or morals, don’t do it” continue to resonate with her. Early in her career, Caitlyn found herself trying to please people, which led her to accept opportunities that were not aligned with her true vision. Now, she stands firm in her principles. “My accommodations are mandatory, not suggestions,” she asserts. By setting clear boundaries, Caitlyn has strengthened her resolve and continues to advocate fiercely for inclusivity.
As a leader in industries traditionally dominated by men, Caitlyn has learned to advocate for herself and establish boundaries. “I will not let men talk over me, I will not let them disrespect me, and I will ask them to leave if they continue to do so.” During a fashion week trip to Italy, Caitlyn had to confront a caretaker over their disrespectful behavior, sending a clear message about the importance of respecting boundaries. She remains unapologetic in her pursuit of equality and respect.
Like many successful leaders, she has made mistakes along the way. One of her early errors was overproducing inventory, leaving her with an overwhelming amount of stock. From this experience, she learned to pace herself and focus on quality over quantity. Now, she operates her business with a made-to-order model that allows her to create better products while avoiding unnecessary stress. Caitlyn approaches difficult conversations with thoughtfulness and integrity. Whether negotiating a salary or addressing conflict, she prioritizes her moral and ethical standards. “You can simply just say no and walk away from the situation,” she explains. For Caitlyn, professionalism means being calm, collected, and true to herself, even when facing chaos. Caitlyn credits much of her growth to her business partner, Via, whose resilience has inspired her to stand firm in her beliefs. Another major influence is Nita Godwin, whose kindness and determination continue to motivate Caitlyn to chase her dreams. Through these relationships, Caitlyn has learned to define her boundaries and pursue her goals with passion.
For Caitlyn, maintaining balance is essential. She sets clear boundaries between her personal and professional life, taking time to unplug and recharge with her family. During board games with my family, we do not allow electronics. We play music and laugh,” she says. By compartmentalizing her time and focusing on what matters most, Caitlyn manages to excel in both areas of her life. One of Caitlyn’s most powerful daily habits involves deep breathing and affirmations. Taking a moment each day to center herself and reaffirm her goals has proven to be an invaluable tool for maintaining focus and confidence. “Reassurance is an important part of self-care that can often be overlooked,” Caitlyn notes.
She combats self-doubt by reflecting on her accomplishments. Having overcome significant challenges, including paralysis, she draws strength from her resilience and determination. “I don’t think we know how strong we truly are until we have no choice BUT to be strong,” she asserts. Her journey has taught her many lessons, but the hardest has been accepting that not everyone will support her efforts. “You are not for every audience, and that’s okay,” she says. Despite this, she remains committed to her mission and focused on helping those who resonate with her message.
A particularly proud moment for Caitlyn was when her jewelry designs walked in Paris Fashion Week this past February. The experience of seeing her creativity showcased alongside designs by Via Moscato was one she will never forget. “I was tickled pink,” Caitlyn recalls with joy. Navigating her industry as a woman with a disability has presented Caitlyn with unique challenges. “If they don’t make space for me at a table, I’ll roll my wheelchair right up to that table,” she says confidently. Caitlyn is determined to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be represented and heard.
Caitlyn believes that when women rise, everyone rises. She emphasizes that women’s nurturing qualities are assets in any business. Caitlyn’s leadership journey is a testament to her resilience, passion, and dedication to making the world a more inclusive place. Her story is a powerful reminder that every obstacle can be overcome with courage, determination, and authenticity.
